Close Log In. While the series would periodically have strong runs of episodes, it could never quite seem to recapture the all-tension-all-the-time sense of breathless excitement generated by the first half of its run. Is it true? All the career pressure, the hopelessness, gone. Would he even want anything to do with him? The one that defines you. Dexter: You don't know this about me, but I'm actually kind of a breakfast connoisseur. Fanservice Extra : Kristen Miller plays the chick Tricia at Dexter's 20th anniversary high school reunion who decides to give Dexter a blow job and takes her top off while doing it. Debra: Are you He's also a serial killer. Season four follows a similar pattern, but is considered by many to be the high-water mark of the series, a superlative blend of thrills and oddball character study that received its jolt of creative uplift in the form of guest star John Lithgow. The show premiered on Showtime in It's very unlikely, which means we won't get to see Masuka. The girl has suffered enough. Naturally, this leads Dexter to begin wondering if Harry wasn't really some sort of Manipulative Bastard who wanted to train and use Dexter for his own personal war on crime. Dexter: [VO] The only real question I have is why in a building full of cops, all supposedly with a keen insight to the human soul, is Doakes the only one who gets the creeps from me? Yates, whom Dexter identifies as the Surgeon and kills; it's not until three episodes later that we learn the real Brain Surgeon is still at large. Adhering to The Code of Harry — his adopted father, a police officer who saw the makings of a serial killer in him long ago — Dexter confines his homicidal urges to those criminals who have gotten away with their crimes , and does it so carefully and cleanly that he is not likely to get caught. The stuff of nightmares. Hall , a forensic blood-spatter analyst who works for the Miami Metro Police Department. As Dexter Morgan started to evolve as a character, it was almost inevitable that his moral code would start to shift. Dexter: It's a laminate. So he steals a carton of milk from his victim's fridge. Dexter: [thinking to himself] Jordan is one tough nut to crack. Dexter: Swordfight. It's very unlikely he ever got rid of him since Harry helped him function in the real world. This was good, though, as Astor had been turned into a horrible teenager whose only contribution was acting like a young punk. It may not have ever been the prestige TV programming it occasionally feinted at, but it was a hell of a lot of fun. Dexter: I'm a serial killer. Louis Greene is seemingly set up as a major antagonist for Season 7. Stay clean and stay out of my way, we won't have a problem. But you know he's dead. Harry Morgan committed suicide all the way back in , but he was a part of the show as Dexter's dark passenger, an internalized voice that helped Dexter navigate difficult life decisions. Rape and Revenge : Basically Lumen's whole plan in season 5. That would be the code of Harry Morgan James Remar , his adoptive father and police detective who adopted the toddler after his parents died. Dexter: It'd be good to catch up with some of the old friends Rape as Backstory : Dexter mentions in the pilot episode that Rita's ex-husband repeatedly beat and raped her, presumably for years. That's the sound of your life running out. I'm not joking. Cody: How did you get that ugly scar?! Christina was becoming a star while in the series, so was also chasing other acting engagements. Hannah: On a date? Season 5 has Quinn and Liddy aggressively attempting to prove Dexter is a murderer, eventually leading to Dexter killing Liddy. You need to login to do this. In season 5, Dexter finds out that Astor's friend Olivia's stepfather hits her. Abuse Mistake : In season 5, episode 8, Dexter and Lumen hear a woman's screams, think Jordan Chase and his rape gang are attacking another victim, and rush to the rescue.
This also means that the supporting cast can be up for a return as well. There are also certain others whose return would be most welcome. Among the characters that fans want actors to reprise for Dexter, Batista ranks high. His last true arc was about being named lieutenant, following which Batista was there for the sake of making up the numbers. He should return in order to make up for his lack of action the last time fans saw him. Unlike her brother, Jamie was never made out to be a main character. She was pretty much there to bring in a sense of innocence to the show, but even this was removed from her characterization in the later seasons when she became a jealous girlfriend. Just when Joey was finally getting a resolution to his story, the show decided to kill Debra off. However, this can be used to prepare him for a redemption tale, as Quinn can be shown to still be grieving for Debra. The return of Dexter can spurn Quinn into returning to his roots as a cop. This was good, though, as Astor had been turned into a horrible teenager whose only contribution was acting like a young punk. Of course, that was all when Dexter had thought he was going to leave with Hannah for a new life. Due to his immature antics but fun-loving nature, Masuka usually lands either side on the characters fans love or hate on Dexter. For this reason, Masuka should be excluded from the revival as fans can simply interpret that he went on to have a fulfilling life. Despite technically being a good guy, James Doakes lands on the list of biggest villains on Dexter. This came down to his constant stalking of the titular character, as Doakes correctly assumed that Dexter had a dark secret to hide. It would be fascinating to see his manifestation taunt Dexter for all his failures, reminding him how the real Doakes had promised Dexter would pay for his crimes. It would be better to kill her off-screen or just ignore her former presence altogether. The main reason why she should stay gone is that her return would simply make Dexter the weak character he was around her. They also had a touching romance based on either person coping with depression and abuse. Her departure never made sense, with the explanation of her dark passenger leaving a pretty lame one. Her death was also chastised by fans for being very rushed. Apart from freelance writing, Saim is a lifestyle blogger, co-owning the blog 3 States Apart. In Season 7 this is abandoned, as Louis is back to being annoyed about his video game before he is anticlimactically dispatched. Considering how many years have passed since Dexter last saw her, he probably won't look her up. It would be better to kill her off-screen or just ignore her former presence altogether. Right Behind Me : Deb has a problem running her mouth. A limited revivial series titled Dexter: New Blood will air in late Harry: And your secret life. Some less than others, obviously, but it's still there. Dexter: [internally] Make your mind up Masuka: [defensively] I'm funny. Dexter: You don't know this about me, but I'm actually kind of a breakfast connoisseur. Whether you saw the twist coming or it caught you off-guard was almost beside the point, which was the most damning thing of all—by that point in the season, almost no one cared. With TV Club 10, we point you toward the 10 episodes that best represent a TV series, classic or modern. It's very unlikely, which means we won't get to see Masuka. Rita: Anyway, have a nice day. That's the sound of your life running out. Dexter: It's a laminate. Oh god, that feels so amazing to say out loud. Really Gets Around : Debra becomes a serial monogamist after the first season, with roughly bed buddies throughout the span of the series, in part due to the difficulty she has getting close to people and the demands of her job. Rage Against the Reflection : In the Season 5 finale, when Lumen tells him that she needs to leave , Dexter sees his reflection in a dinner plate he's holding. Has to happen. It would be interesting to see him track down Dexter - if he finds out where he is, of course. I did. It zipped along with the energy and lurid fun of a paperback thriller, the visual equivalent of a killer beach read. While he was dragging his corpse out, he remembers a phone call from his girlfriend who asked him to pick up some milk for the kids. But they're entirely unreliable. In Season 6 Louis is being set up as a possible serial killer antagonist, and not only that but an antagonist who knows about Dexter's secret life, as he mails Dexter the Ice Truck Killer's fake hand. A killer of killers, in other words. Dexter: [thinking to himself] Jordan is one tough nut to crack. But you know he's dead. Season four follows a similar pattern, but is considered by many to be the high-water mark of the series, a superlative blend of thrills and oddball character study that received its jolt of creative uplift in the form of guest star John Lithgow. After all, she wasn't a main character. Debra even developed feelings for her sociopathic brother. Instead, the show sputtered through potentially rich narratives with only fitfully rewarding results. For this reason, Masuka should be excluded from the revival as fans can simply interpret that he went on to have a fulfilling life. So he steals a carton of milk from his victim's fridge. Oh, also? A lot of cops have been where you are. Dexter falls in love in Lumen, a girl broken by being repeatedly raped and tortured. That'll work. Debra Morgan, Dexter's adoptive sister, probably won't be returning since she was last seen dead, dropped in the ocean. Her death was also chastised by fans for being very rushed. Dexter's employment and close involvement with police investigations, yet lack of a badge. It's time for you to take responsibility. Are you a serial killer? In leather. Dexter reconciles with Rita. At least a part of season 9 will be set in Iron Lake, New York, but it is not known yet whether Dexter will come back to Miami at any point. He has a loving tomboy foul-mouthed sister who works as a cop in his department, and a host of eccentric coworkers. Rape as Backstory : Dexter mentions in the pilot episode that Rita's ex-husband repeatedly beat and raped her, presumably for years. How would Batista feel about seeing Dexter again?
With TV Club 10, we point you toward the 10 episodes that best represent a TV series, classic or modern. The A. By the end, the show was on a slow and steady march into the Florida swamp, any good qualities inevitably buried by its final arc. But no TV show need be judged solely by its worst moments. Like any long-running program, Dexter had its ups and downs—in its early years, it even hit some highs. When the creative team was firing on all cylinders, the series was as gripping and heady as any thriller on television, full of adventurous plots, twisty storytelling, and the occasional nasty bit of violence. And for all its dark subject matter, Dexter was populist TV, through and through. It zipped along with the energy and lurid fun of a paperback thriller, the visual equivalent of a killer beach read. Dexter began life as an adaptation of Darkly Dreaming Dexter , the first in a series of novels by author Jeff Lindsey. While the first season roughly followed the plot of that book, subsequent years mostly cast aside the source material in favor of original stories. The show revolved around the work of Dexter Morgan Michael C. Hall , a forensic blood-spatter analyst who works for the Miami Metro Police Department. From the outside, he looks like a model citizen: Aside from helping catch bad guys in his day job, Dexter has a steady relationship with Rita Bennett Julie Benz , a working mom with two small boys, Astor and Cody, with whom he gets along well. Oh, also? But not just any old killer—Dexter lives by a certain code. That would be the code of Harry Morgan James Remar , his adoptive father and police detective who adopted the toddler after his parents died. A killer of killers, in other words. You could understand why most people liked him—and also why none of them cared enough to be particularly close friends. The first season follows Dexter as he attempted to deliver his vigilante justice without arousing suspicion, especially from the one person in Homicide, Sergeant James Doakes Erik King , who seemed to suspect the forensic analyst was up to no good. Season two ends with Doakes dead—framed by Lila for the Bay Harbor Butcher murders—and Dexter killing Lila, thereby ensuring no one alive knows his secret. The plot twists continued to flow as freely as any soap opera throughout the years. In season three, Dexter finds a sympathetic party in Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado Jimmy Smits , who initially hopes to help guide his vigilante killings. The season ends with Dexter killing both Miguel and the Skinner, just in time to make it to his wedding to Rita. Season four follows a similar pattern, but is considered by many to be the high-water mark of the series, a superlative blend of thrills and oddball character study that received its jolt of creative uplift in the form of guest star John Lithgow. After such a riveting and impressive conclusion to a superb season, it was maybe inevitable that Dexter would start to lose steam creatively, if not commercially. Viewership continued to climb all the way through season seven. Lumen wants to get revenge by killing each member of the group, and Dexter, recognizing something akin to his own Dark Passenger, agrees to help her, as they take them out one by one, leading up to motivational speaker Jordan Chase Jonny Lee Miller. Viewers responded overwhelmingly negatively, but the finale—in which Debra walks in just as Dexter captures and kills Travis—suggested a volatile future. That promised intensity never really materialized. Instead, the show sputtered through potentially rich narratives with only fitfully rewarding results. In the finale, she dies from complications after surgery, and Dexter, distraught over her death, abandons his plan to join Hannah and his son, in which the three of them would start a new life abroad, and instead fakes his own death to start a new, isolated life as a lumberjack in the Pacific Northwest. While the series would periodically have strong runs of episodes, it could never quite seem to recapture the all-tension-all-the-time sense of breathless excitement generated by the first half of its run. Some of this might be attributable to behind-the-scenes changes; showrunner Clyde Phillips departed after season four, and after a one-season stint with former 24 exec producer Chip Johannessen in charge, the final three seasons were handed over to Scott Buck, a writer with the show since season two. But none of that changes the fact that, for at least four seasons, Dexter maintained a dark and visceral intensity, pulpy storytelling elevated by strong performances, sharp direction, and excellent production design. It may not have ever been the prestige TV programming it occasionally feinted at, but it was a hell of a lot of fun. The first episode of Dexter is a superb introduction to the world of Dexter Morgan, with all its attendant secrets and subterfuges. By stripping away the more simplistic trappings of even its more tertiary characters—all with an eye toward deepening and complicating Dexter himself— Dexter proved itself willing to take the necessary time to pay off investment in these people and their deeply messed-up problems. Not only that, but it gave Dexter a chance to be sloppy in a kill: By making his history even more distant and disturbed, it ironically makes him that much more human. In its early seasons, Dexter was so skilled at paying off long-running storylines, the audience could be forgiven for not even noticing just how many narrative balls were in the air before the show expertly caught every single one, often simultaneously. Dexter reconciles with Rita. And after Lila tries to kill Dexter and his family, the series demonstrates its willingness to expand this universe far beyond the city limits of Miami, as Dexter travels to Paris in order to kill his former flame turned pyromaniac, ironically enough. The episode is fast-paced, exciting, and smartly staged and executed— Dexter is arguably never better. As Dexter Morgan started to evolve as a character, it was almost inevitable that his moral code would start to shift. There are parts of the Trinity Killer storyline that felt rushed, but the conclusion was so gripping, it retroactively made everything that came before feel that much more potent. After successfully tracking down and killing Arthur Mitchell, Dexter returns home, secure in the knowledge that everyone he cares about is safe from the Trinity Killer. Dexter often felt like two different shows—one great and complicated series about a serial killer trying to carry out his mission while evading detection, and a second, subpar series about police detectives in a homicide division dealing with the soap-opera turns of their personal and professional lives.
